- You may have a new Pentium machine, but you may still have a slow
- serial port (8250 or 16450) on that machine. All too many companies
- still aren't willing to spend the extra $3 to install fast serial
- ports on a system.
-
- Here's something to try: get a serial port board (Hayes and USR both
- sell 'em, and so do many others) that has a NS16550 or even an NS1660
- chip (or equivalent) on it. Disable the system board serial port if
- it has one, or disable the serial port(s) on the multi-function card
- that many people are now installing in system. Plug the board in,
- and then make sure you install the drivers that come with the board.
- (This is true for Windows95 and Windows 3.11.)
-
- If you are running Windows95, you can adjust the FIFO trigger points.
- My preference is to set them for half-full, and if you have the 16650
- you can set the output for interrupt at half-empty. Some drivers
- won't let you set the output FIFO trigger point to anything except
- empty -- that's fine, it just impacts performance a few percent or
- so.
-
- With 8250 or 16450 serial ports (the ones without on-chip FIFO)
- you are lucky if you get reasonable performance at 9600 bps. With
- the 16550 or better, you can push a Windows machine running on the
- Pentium to 38400 bps without tuning, and to 115200 bps with some
- tuning and a speed-aware application.
